When to Hire a Wedding Planner Nov 10

I have just attended a wedding as a helper for a photographer I know.

The couple was arriving aboard a cruise ship. Their plan was to have a ceremony followed by cake and champagne.   The venue was a beautiful tropical garden setting which eight inches of rain the previous day, had made the grounds wet and soggy.

The Wedding was scheduled to begin at 11 am.

What the couple didn’t know was that their cruise ship line stays on Eastern Standard Time.

The Island is on Atlantic Standard Time an hour earlier.

What should have been a relaxing morning getting ready, turned into a series of frantic calls to vendors changing the time of the wedding.

What the couple didn’t know was that the transportation they reserved to move guest from the ship to the venue was not large enough to carry 15 guest and 3 handicap scooters.

What should have been a leisurely ride from the ship to the venue turned into three trips back and forth.   This resulted in additional money for transportation.

What the couple didn’t know was that the money they paid for the scooter rental and their transporting was wasted. The venue had a no scooter rule due to width of paths.

What the Bride didn’t know was how to get into a wedding dress, and no you do not put it over the head if you just spent two hours getting your hair done.

What the Bride didn’t know was that packing a Brooch bouquet in your suitcase would break it apart.  It was too late to order fresh flowers.

What the groom didn’t know was that being the last person to arrive would set the ceremony back even more, waiting for him to get dressed.

What the couple didn’t know was that if you give Uncle Joe a video camera, he is going to use it, even if it means getting in all of the professional photographers pictures.  Kind of hard for even a professional photographer to shoot around him.  Which cost more?  Uncle Joe or the professional photographer?

When hiring a professional Photographer don't wast money with guest in the pictures.

What the couple didn’t know was that when hiring vendors for an one hour wedding, the ceremony length has to be discussed with Aunt Jane who is officiating it.  Otherwise it will run on and on and on.

What the couple didn’t know was when the ceremony is stopped in the middle, so that an attendant can retrieve forgotten rings, it just adds more time to the vendors already overtime clock.

What the couple didn’t know was that all the times the professional photographer was delayed so that guest could take pictures cost them money and lost pictures.

What the couple didn’t know was that all the delays and miscommunication would cost them in overtime they had to pay to vendors.

What the couple didn’t know was that when planning a destination wedding outside of the U.S. there is sometimes cultural difference in business and vendors.

What the couple didn’t know was that it would have been more enjoyable, less stressful and less costly to have a Wedding planner.

They know it now.

How to write your wedding vows. Oct 02

As a wedding Officiate I get asked all sort of questions by  bridal couples in regards to their ceremony.  However the top question asked is how do I write my vows?   What should I say?    How do I start?

While the speaking of vows are an important part of the ceremony it is really the most effortless part to create because it comes from the heart.

I tell my couples to think of the vows as a promise to each other.  What do you promise to bring into this relationship? What drew you to your spouse to be?  What do you think is important to your future spouse, in which you want to confirm ,with a promise that you are going to full fill in this marriage?

Because that really is what vows are, a confirmation of your love and  support.

They are a declaration of Intention, below is prelude that I  use right before the  couple recite  their vows to each other.

Before the exchange of Vows.

The vows through which you will accept each other as husband and wife have no hidden power within them. Only to the extent that they express in words your continuing intention and commitment do they have meaning. And in a world where the pressures pushing people apart will sometimes feel stronger than those drawing people together, your commitment to one another will need to be creatively re-expressed in many different ways in the coming days and years.  The expression in today’s vows is an important and visible milestone in your journey together.

Speak from your heart but sometimes expressing oneself is a challenge .  If that is the case then do some research and find a poem or verse that  fits what your heart is feeling.   It might take a bit of energy and time but its worth it.

St. Thomas , Water Island , Virgin Islands Folk legends Feb 25

Proceed with caution:  this brief little history lesson is one I have cobbled together from various personal stories, legends, and reading material.  I cannot vouch for the veritable history I am going to tell, but it is a little enlightening and entertaining.  If that is what you seek, please read on and enjoy!

Across the harbor from Charlotte-Amalie is Hassel Island, which used to be part of mainland St. Thomas.  Back in the 1930′s, a trench was cut near Frenchtown to reach West Gregerie Channel to provide two ways in and out of the harbor.  But in the 17thcentury when the Danish built a fort over on Hassel Island, there was only one way in and out, the Havensightside, where most of the cruise ships dock today.  The Danes knew this, so they would wait for the pirate ships to sail into the harbor, laden with plundered treasure and other goods.  The Danes ran a heavy chain across from the fort on Hassel Island to St. Thomas, thus trapping the pirates’ ships in the harbor.  The vessels couldn’t leave the harbor because their hulls would get caught on the chain, and they were effectively sitting ducks for the Danish cannons.

There is estimated to be $800 billion in treasure at the bottom of St. Thomas harbor, due to the Danes’ cannons and various shipwrecks from weather and disaster.  To give some idea of how vast a figure that is, President Barack Obama’s initial stimulus package for the United States had a $780 billion price tag.  Unfortunately, nobody can get to all that booty.  It’s under 18 feet of silt.  Every time it rains on St. Thomas, everything that washes down from the mountains flows right out into the harbor, so the harbor floor is continually covered in layer upon layer of muck.  Even the “super salvagers” like Mel Fisher from the Atocha fame of Key West can’t reach it, because they just don’t have the technology yet.

But, every now and then, a hurricane or tropical storm will disturb those layers of muck on the floor of the harbor, and we may find booty washed up on our shores and beaches.  Not all of it is in gold doubloons, mind you, but it all has value.  An intact bottle from the 17thcentury might well bring in a few hundred dollars.  The tiny chip from a dinner plate found in a shipwreck in the harbor I wear around my neck cost $45.00, so be aware, that useless pottery shard, clay pipe, or what have you that you find while beachcombing may boast a hefty price tag, too.  Happy Hunting!

Incidentally Water Island has one of the best beaches for weddings in the Virgin Islands.  When planning on a St. Thomas wedding , inquire about Honey Moon beach on Water Island.  The clear water and sandy beach make an ideal setting.  Since Water Island is not connected to St. Thomas it does not have the heavy tourist traffic.   A ferry makes the 5 min trip every hour to Water Island from St. Thomas Crown Bay Marina.
